De Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie
De Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie, ook bekend als de VOC, was een belangrijk Nederlands handelsbedrijf in de 17e en 18e eeuw. Het werd opgericht in 1602 en kreeg het alleenrecht op Nederlandse handel met Oost-Indië, wat tegenwoordig Indonesië, delen van Zuidoost-Azië en India omvatte.

Helaas raakte de VOC in de problemen aan het einde van de 18e eeuw. Ze hadden financiële problemen en er waren ook corruptieschandalen. Uiteindelijk werd het bedrijf in 1799 opgeheven.
