Prepositions and their usage
In the Dutch language, prepositions play a crucial role in expressing relationships between different words in a sentence. Prepositions are used to indicate location, time, direction, manner, and other aspects of relationships within a sentence. They are usually placed before nouns, pronouns, or noun phrases, and they govern the case of the noun or pronoun that follows.
Here are some common prepositions in Dutch along with their meanings and examples of usage:
Aan (on, at, to):
- Hij woont aan de rivier. (He lives by the river.)
- Ik geef het cadeau aan mijn vriend. (I am giving the gift to my friend.)
In (in, inside):
- De kat zit in de doos. (The cat is in the box.)
- Ik woon in Nederland. (I live in the Netherlands.)
Op (on, onto):
- Het boek ligt op de tafel. (The book is on the table.)
- Hij staat op de ladder. (He is standing on the ladder.)
Met (with):
- Ik ga naar het feest met mijn vrienden. (I am going to the party with my friends.)
- Hij eet pasta met een vork. (He is eating pasta with a fork.)
Van (from, of):
- Hij komt vanuit België. (He comes from Belgium.)
- Dit is het huis van mijn ouders. (This is my parents' house.)
Voor (for, in front of):

Tussen (between):

- De vergadering is tussen 9 en 10 uur. (The meeting is between 9 and 10 o'clock.)
Achter (behind):
- Het boek ligt achter de stoel. (The book is behind the chair.)
- De auto reed achter de bus. (The car was driving behind the bus.)
Naast (next to, beside):
- Het park ligt naast het winkelcentrum. (The park is next to the shopping center.)
- Ik zit naast mijn broer in de klas. (I sit beside my brother in class.)
Onder (under, below):
- De sleutels liggen onder de krant. (The keys are under the newspaper.)
- De hond slaapt onder het bed. (The dog is sleeping under the bed.)
